Recently I was gifted a pair of legitimate Mazda OEM BBS M-Edition Miata wheels. They measure 15x6 and are in the timeless LM-esque style. The tragedy that befell these two glorious wheels left them slightly bent, although it would take a discerning eye to notice. While I was given them under the pretense of me selling them to make a buck or two I think I've concocted a better plan!
These two wheels will be the focal point of a coffee table I've been meaning to build for months now. The plan is to have both of them facing upwards, on some sort of stained wood structure that will allow for a low shelf between them, with a piece of glass situated on the faces.
I was planning on wrapping them in some race-used rubber off of my friends spec-E30 racecar, but I think that would push the diameter to larger than I want to make the table. Right now the last piece of the puzzle will be an appropriately sized piece of glass(hopefully to be found on craigslist out of some cheap coffee table). Another option I have is using the back flip-down piece off of another friends camper top that he is going to scrap soon... think that would be a cool touch?
And for anyone who saw my posts over the past few weeks, these were all taken with the Canon 20D that my friend is letting me borrow, any suggestions to make them better?

Is the glass on the camper shell thick enough to handle the use as a coffee table? A lot of them use thin glass.

It would only overhang about 1.5" front and back, and wouldn't have very much unsupported in the middle either. If I use the camper top glass I'll leave the aluminum frame and seal on it to help with rigidity too.

My concern would be actually sitting stuff on it. They are super easy to break.

I was drilling and beating on it a good bit the other day to get the hinge and frame portion off of it the other day and didn't manage to break it. Nothing heavier than a plate of food or a laptop would really be set on it so I don't think strength will be an issue. But who knows...

Well if you find a free coffee table on CL, I would use that. But if not, trial and error.

Like propping your feet up.

Hmmmm, that would take a bit more fabrication to do, I already decided against doing it out of aluminum and just sticking with wood.... I think I might have another plan though.
It will involve the tires, wheels, and camper top thing, and then if I break the camper thingy I'll get some legit table glass.

Then I would just try something like this, and use the tires to keep the glass from sliding around.

That was my first idea, but the wheels with tires pushes it to almost 24" in diameter, which would be quite wide for the space I have to deal with

Ok here is my suggestion, put them back to back, then space them out as far as you want, make rectangle 2x2 for top & bottom then set glass on 2x2 on top
Then the bottom rectangle make ends similar to wooden picnic table but with a center section that connects each end.
This would only need wood to be fabricated into some squares then add legs. I can't draw good but this would be the cut away center section
Ok of course KINJA or iPhone would flip the image.
I also have 2 extra rims that are tireless

I have a pretty solid plan I came up with, I'm just planning on using some of those rubber or felt sticky circles on the lip of the wheel to keep the glass from sliding or teetering. I'll snap a picture of my plan once I get home.

Yeah, it seems that a rims table would be easier to complete than the engine table thing, and lighter.

I found an appropriately sized piece of glass earlier, gonna go get it tomorrow afternoon and I think I will have this think sorted out for <$50.
